Enjoy a classic Patty Melt featuring juicy beef patties, melted cheddar and Swiss cheese, caramelized Vidalia onions, and a tangy secret sauce, all toasted to golden perfection on marble rye bread. This comforting sandwich is perfect for a hearty lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Beef Patties

  • 680 grams lean ground beef
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper

Sandwich Assembly

  • 12 slices marble rye bread
  • 3 slices cheddar cheese
  • 3 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 Vidalia onions, thinly sliced
  • 0.5 cup secret sauce

Secret Sauce

  • 60 milliliters mayonnaise
  • 60 milliliters Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon barbecue sauce
  • 0.5 teaspoon hot sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, barbecue sauce, and hot sauce until the mixture is smooth and well combined, creating a flavorful tangy sauce for the sandwich.
  2. Make the Beef Patties: In a large mixing bowl, gently combine the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper without overmixing to keep the patties tender. Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and form each into an oval-shaped patty of uniform thickness.
  3. Caramelize the Onions: Melt 4 tablespoons of the unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced Vidalia onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and develop a golden brown color, enhancing their natural sweetness.
  4. Cook the Patties: Heat another skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 2 minutes on each side, allowing them to brown nicely on the outside while remaining juicy inside. Once done, remove the patties and wipe the skillet clean.
  5. Assemble and Toast the Sandwich: Spread a thin layer of butter on the outsides of each slice of marble rye bread. Place the bread butter-side down on the skillet. Layer each sandwich in this order: spread secret sauce on the bread, add caramelized onions, place a slice of cheddar cheese, add one beef patty, top with a slice of Swiss cheese, add more onions and secret sauce, and finally top with another slice of bread, buttered side up. Toast until the bread is golden brown and the cheese melts, then carefully flip to toast the other side.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess grease and keep patties juicy.
  • Caramelizing the onions slowly brings out their natural sweetness and adds depth to the sandwich.
  • Butter the outside of the bread slices well to ensure a crisp, golden crust when toasted.
  • Feel free to adjust the amount of secret sauce to your preference for extra tanginess.
  • Serve immediately while the cheese is melty and patties are hot for best flavor.
